reclusive life
Only one kind of journey is possible: the one we undertake to our own inside world - A. Tarkovsky
« Le seul véritable voyage, le seul bain de Jouvence, ce ne serait pas d’aller vers de nouveaux paysages, mais d’avoir d’autres yeux… » Marcel Proust, La Prisonnière, in À la recherche du temps perdu, III, Bibliothèque de la Pléiade, Gallimard, 1988, p. 762.

decorating time
Niclas Tamas
I am a mostly self-taught composer.
For a long time I worked with pen and paper. In 2008 I started making music entirely on my iPhone, simply because it gave me a new way of working. In 2016 I moved to Logic, but the basic approach stayed the same: trying things, listening, changing direction, and following where the music wants to go.
There is a large body of work before the music I am releasing now. I think of it all as one long process rather than separate periods.
My recent work is slower, more spacious, and often built around a single idea or state of mind. Roads Through the Mirror is a continuing cycle built around spirituality, nostalgia, poetry and time.
For many years I have used the phrase “decorating time” for what I do.
That still feels accurate.
Self-taught
I am mostly self-taught. I never really followed a prescribed route into music.
For a long time I composed with pen and paper, learning mainly by doing: writing, listening, discarding things and starting again.
That is still basically how I work.
iPhone → Logic
In 2008 I started making complete pieces of music on my iPhone.
At the time, using a phone as the main tool for composing and producing music was still unusual. I liked the limitation of it, and also the freedom of being able to work anywhere.
In 2016 I moved to Logic. The possibilities became much larger, but I kept something of the same attitude: use what is needed and keep the technology secondary to the music.
Before Zenapolae
The releases on Zenapolae are only the most recent part of my work.
There is a large catalogue before them, made over many years and with very different means. I don't regard it as a separate past. It is where much of what I do now came from.
Zenapolae
I started releasing music through Zenapolae in 2024.
It is where my current catalogue lives, including Roads Through the Mirror.
The earlier work is still part of the story, but Zenapolae marks the beginning of what I am doing now.
Decorating time
Music has always been a way of decorating time — giving it colour, weight, movement and space.
The tools have changed: pen and paper, an iPhone from 2008, Logic since 2016. The attention to time has remained.
